Mass Effect 5: We Have First Contact

Mass Effect 5 opens with a familiar face. Image copyright Bioware.

After misstepping with 2017’s Mass Effect: Andromeda, Bioware appears ready to right the ship with Mass Effect 5. Familiar characters, factions, and an old adversary returns in the new trailer. Let’s get into it.

The trailer begins with a descent into the Milky Way Galaxy. An old radio transmission shows that this might be humanity’s first steps into the larger galaxy. We were being monitored. We now might be ready to talk back.

Arcturus Station requests first contact protocols as an unknown vessel approaches. Is this the Turians? We know First Contact didn’t go well…

We continue through the galaxy, passing Neptune (Venus?) until coming into some telltale wreckage and garbled, harried communications. Something has gone wrong (as it often does in war). Before we hear the familiar peals of an an enemy that gave us all nightmares, we hear the distinct command to abandon ship. Because we all know; nothing stands against a Reaper.

More space. We pass into another galaxy. A small vessel descends onto an ice world before we see…someone…reach down and pluck an old N7 tag out of the snow.

Is this after Mass Effect 3 and if so, what’s the official canon ending?

Then, everything goes insane.

Beneath the cloak is a familiar face. She smiles, observing a small crew in the distance. There are ships in the horizon that just might be Reapers…

It has been a long, long time since I was so excited for Mass Effect. This game looks promising and thrilling and everything we love about the old universe. I’ll keep you updated as more information comes out. Thanks for reading.
